Uber adds tipping in SA

Uber riders in South Africa who want to reward great service will now be able to offer tips to their drivers.

At the end of every trip, riders will now be able to issue a selected range of tipping to their driver-partner. This feature will also be available when ordering food from Uber Eats.

Over the past year, Uber has introduced a number of new features in the Uber application to simplify and improve the experience for what it calls “driver-partners” in South Africa. Some of the changes that have been introduced include paid for wait time, notifications of long trips, ratings protection, and an in-app chat function.

“Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of drivers asking us to roll out an in-app tipping function, so their clients can more easily reward great service and the act of going above and beyond what’s expected,” says Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa. “Improving the driving experience has been a key priority for us over the last year. We’re excited to roll out this new feature as a continuation of this effort and make the app work best for over 13 000 drivers in South Africa.

“We believe this will make a huge difference in the driver-partners lives and will ensure they continue to have a positive experience with the Uber app.”

At the end of each trip, Uber and Uber Eats users will be given the option of various values of tipping, or a customisable amount to their driver-partner or courier. These options will be made available below the rating and compliments section and will remain completely optional. Payments will be deducted from the rider’s registered credit card or cash paying customers are free to tip an additional amount of their choice.

Not all driver-partners will see this option as Uber requires drivers to opt-in before being able to accept tips.
