The Girl From St Agnes

At St Agnes, a prestigious all-girls boarding school in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, the only saint is in the name. When a popular student is found dead at the base of the old mill, the school is quick to declare the death a tragic accident. But drama teacher Kate Ballard (Nina Milner) doesn’t believe it. The more she investigates, the more Kate realises that she didn’t know the dead girl, Lexi Summerveld (Jane DeWet), or the school at all. Behind the imposing walls of St Agnes, Lexi’s killer won’t be the only person exposed.

The eight-part TV show, The Girl From St Agnes, premieres on Showmax on 31 January 2019.

Here are four reasons to be excited about the series:

It’s a drama in South African English, for a change

The TV show is a rare showcase of South Africa’s English-language acting talent.
“English-speaking actors generally work internationally and they have to do American or British accents to make decent money,” says legendary casting director Moonyeenn Lee, who’s been nominated for two Emmy Awards in the past three years, for The Looming Tower and Roots. “That was why it was nice when this came up, to do English, but South African English.”

It’s being distributed internationally

In a South African first, the dark drama is being distributed internationally by Red Arrow Studios International (Death and Nightingales, Bosch).

It’s only eight binge-able episodes

Look, we love soaps and telenovelas as much as the next South African, but sometimes it’s nice to watch something with a satisfying ending, like finding out who killed Lexi Summerveld and why.

It’s like nothing you’ve seen before on South African TV

On Showmax, South Africans normally turn to HBO series for edgy content, rather than local series, which tend to be a lot more conservative, with nudity and divisive topics generally avoided. Conservative isn’t a word anyone’s going to use for this TV show.

Civilization VI goes to Mali

Mali is the latest civilisation to join the roster of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. Led in the game by Mansa Musa, arguably the richest man who ever lived, the Mali in Civilization VI are an adaptable civilisation suitable for any victory condition. With strong economic and faith-based perks, the Mali can easily make up for, and surpass, the limitations hindering most desert-based empires.

The game will be released for Windows on 14 February.

New District – Suguba

This replacement for the Commercial Hub allows Mali to purchase units, buildings, and districts at a reduced cost, with either gold or faith. It also provides additional gold for adjacent holy sites, tiles containing a river edge, and bonus gold for every two adjacent district tiles.

New Ability – Songs of the Jeli

Provides City Centers with additional faith and food for every adjacent Desert and Desert Hills tile. Mines provide less production to the city, but grant additional gold output. Mali may purchase commercial hub district buildings with faith, but suffer an overall production penalty when constructing buildings or training units.

New Unit – Mandekalu Cavalry

This Medieval-era unit replaces the knight and prevents Mali trader units from being plundered, as long as they are on a land tile within four tiles of a Mandekalu cavalry unit. Combat victories provide gold equal to the unit’s base combat strength.

Mansa Musa New Ability – Sahel Merchants

International trade routes grant gold for each flat desert tile within the originating city’s borders, and Sahel Merchants unlocks an additional trader slot whenever Mali enters a Golden Age.
