Review: BRYAN TURNER

It’s two in the morning, you accidentally empty the Trash folder and something important was in there. Something that wasn’t in the cloud. Don’t stress: Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Mac is here.

Gadget has had this product for review for a while, and it had been tested by permanently deleting useless documents to see if we could get them back. It always recovered files that were supposedly permanently deleted with a “quick scan”, in a few minutes.

This product showed its usefulness two weeks before a major deadline. I was closing programs and getting ready for bed. Final step, empty Trash and go to bed.

The next morning, the most vital part of the deadline was missing. That sinking feeling hit me when I realised I had emptied the Trash and it may have been in there. After 20 minutes of heavy breathing and clicking around folders to verify that it really was gone, I remembered that Stellar Data Recovery had been installed.

I started up the program and initiated a quick scan. Nothing showed up because the computer had been shut down since the Trash bin had been emptied. Luckily, the program has a “deep scan” mode, although it takes a few hours. But it did the trick: A few hours later, the folder was recovered with all the files in it.

This program works and it works well.

Stellar Data Recovery Professional costs $79.99. To read more about this product, click here.

With the ever present threat of power outages coupled with skyrocketing electricity bills, organisations across sectors are looking for energy efficient and power-saving computing solutions. As with its sister device, the CloudGate X, this mini computer is capable of running the Linux, Windows 10 and Chrome operating systems. However, the CloudGate Xs utilises the newest generation Intel Gemini Lake CPU – and thereby offers a critical performance increase of 25% over the CloudGate X. With its new, sleek design, this powerful device also benefits from improved heat dissipation.

“The CloudGate Xs is an ideal replacement for most desktop computers, at a fraction of the cost,” explains Xavier Nel, Head of Product at CloudGate. “It also comes in at the same price point as the CloudGate X, making it an extraordinarily accessible – yet sophisticated – computing solution. Simply plug in a screen, keyboard and mouse and you have a mini-PC for business or education use.”
This is an eco-friendly solution. By using less than 10 percent of the electricity a typical desktop requires, this user-friendly device lowers the energy footprint for an organisation considerably. With warnings of a fragile Eskom power station always nearby, embracing power-savvy technology – which translates into low running costs – has become increasingly important.

From a connectivity perspective, the computer has 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and 1Gig Ethernet. Despite its sleek form, the device boasts three USB 3.0 ports and several others that include VGA, HDMI, RJ45, one DC 12V 2A power input and one 3.5mm audio port. Users will benefit from 4GB DDR4 High-Speed RAM, 64 GB EMMC Solid-State Storage, and an SD card reader. Moreover, storage capacity can be upgraded with an extra 128GB or 256GB m.2 SSD.

The CloudGate Xs ships with a power adapter, VESA Screen Mount, HDMI cable and instruction booklet. Ranging in cost from between R3 499 and R5 199 (depending on the chosen configuration), the CloudGate Xs delivers on several use cases across industry sectors.

Acer has unveiled its TravelMate X514-51 commercial notebook series for small and medium business users. It’s designed for professionals requiring a durable, yet sleek device that can support heavy workloads and frequent business travel.

The TravelMate X5 sports a premium quality magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis for holding up to the rigours of life on the go. These materials are two to four times stronger than standard aluminium alloys at the same thickness, yet weigh between 20-35 percent less. This blend of materials makes the notebook thin and light while also being resistant to bending and twisting.

Highly portable, the notebook computer weighs just 980 grams and measures 15 mm thin making it easier to hold and fit in a briefcase, bag or backpack. Acer claims the computer has up to 10 hours of battery life to support a full day’s work on a single charge. Primed for excellent performance, the new notebooks are powered by up to 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processors, up to 16GB DDR4 memory, and up to fast and responsive two 512GB solid-state drives for viewing and editing large spreadsheets, presentations and videos. Outfitted with Windows 10 Pro, the notebook provides powerful security and productivity essentials.

“We’re confident our professional customers will appreciate our thinnest and lightest professional notebooks to date,” says Belinda Marais from Acer Africa. “Sleek, yet robust, they’re built for the rigours of frequent travel with a sturdy chassis and strong security features to keep data safe at home and abroad.”
