New to Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 is a Magic Button on top of the speaker for convenient music control. Each speaker has balanced audio and 360-degree sound that lets one hear music with high tone-accuracy.
Megaboom 3 also provides deeper bass and improved clarity over its predecessors. Whether at a music festival or a pool party, the iridescent speaker stands out to make music more portable, durable and immersive.
“With Boom 3 and Megaboom 3, we took the Ultimate Ears speaker and made it even better,” says Charlotte Johs, general manager of Ultimate Ears. “Beyond immersive 360-degree sound that is balanced to stay true to your music, we improved the durability of the speakers without compromising on style. We also introduced the Magic Button, getting you to your music faster with just one touch, taking the speaker up a notch.”
The new Magic Button allows one to play, pause and skip tracks directly on the speakers without using one’s phone. When paired with the redesigned Boom & Megaboom by Ultimate Ears iOS mobile app, one will also have one-touch access to Apple Music’s catalogue of more than 45 million songs and one’s full playlists. The Magic Button can also be used to access playlists on Deezer Premium on Android. Additional music services will be added.
Other upgrades to Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 include an IP67 rating, so the speakers are not only waterproof and drop proof, but also dustproof, making them ready for outdoor adventures. Improved Bluetooth range up to 45 meters enhances portability. The speakers float, so you don’t have to worry about losing them at the bottom of the pool. For added convenience, Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 are compatible with the Ultimate Ears Power Up charging dock (sold separately) for wireless charging, and one can charge the speakers upright, thanks to a repositioned USB port.
Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 will be available in four dual-toned colours: Night (Black), Sunset (Red), Lagoon (Blue), and Ultraviolet (Purple).
Pricing and Availability
The speakers are now available in South Africa through Takealot.com. Suggested retail price for Boom 3 is R2,999 and the Megaboom 3 is R3,999. The free Boom & Megaboom by Ultimate Ears mobile app is available for iPhone on App Store and for Android on Google Play.
Canon EOS R
DxOMark has published the results of its in-depth analysis of the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera.
Click through to read about how the camera compares to other small-to-medium cameras.
The Canon EOS R is a mid-range model and the company’s first full-frame mirrorless camera. It features the new RF mount, which at 54mm is the same width as the EF mount, but the focal flange distance is reduced from 44mm to just 20mm. This should pave the way to some very high-performance lenses. For its first camera in the system, Canon has opted for a familiar 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, paired with a DIGIC 8 processor, which enables a native ISO range of 100-40,000 with expansion to 50-102,400, and continuous shooting at up to 8 fps.
The camera’s CMOS sensor achieves an overall DxOMark score of 89 points, which is 29th place among all small- and medium-format cameras in our database. Its key strength is its low-light ISO (Sports) score of 2742 ISO, where it ranks in 27th place overall and in fifth place among the full-frame Canon cameras we’ve tested. Only 0.2 EV (ISO 2742 vs. 3207) separates the EOS R from the best-performing Canon sensor in the EOS-1D X Mark II. The EOS R’s (Portrait) color depth and (Landscape) dynamic range fall some ways behind the best in class, but as with its low-light ISO capabilities, its results are among the best for a Canon sensor.

With the ever present threat of power outages coupled with skyrocketing electricity bills, organisations across sectors are looking for energy efficient and power-saving computing solutions. As with its sister device, the CloudGate X, this mini computer is capable of running the Linux, Windows 10 and Chrome operating systems. However, the CloudGate Xs utilises the newest generation Intel Gemini Lake CPU – and thereby offers a critical performance increase of 25% over the CloudGate X. With its new, sleek design, this powerful device also benefits from improved heat dissipation.
“The CloudGate Xs is an ideal replacement for most desktop computers, at a fraction of the cost,” explains Xavier Nel, Head of Product at CloudGate. “It also comes in at the same price point as the CloudGate X, making it an extraordinarily accessible – yet sophisticated – computing solution. Simply plug in a screen, keyboard and mouse and you have a mini-PC for business or education use.”
This is an eco-friendly solution. By using less than 10 percent of the electricity a typical desktop requires, this user-friendly device lowers the energy footprint for an organisation considerably. With warnings of a fragile Eskom power station always nearby, embracing power-savvy technology – which translates into low running costs – has become increasingly important.
From a connectivity perspective, the computer has 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and 1Gig Ethernet. Despite its sleek form, the device boasts three USB 3.0 ports and several others that include VGA, HDMI, RJ45, one DC 12V 2A power input and one 3.5mm audio port. Users will benefit from 4GB DDR4 High-Speed RAM, 64 GB EMMC Solid-State Storage, and an SD card reader. Moreover, storage capacity can be upgraded with an extra 128GB or 256GB m.2 SSD.
The CloudGate Xs ships with a power adapter, VESA Screen Mount, HDMI cable and instruction booklet. Ranging in cost from between R3 499 and R5 199 (depending on the chosen configuration), the CloudGate Xs delivers on several use cases across industry sectors.
