South Africa begins preparing for Black Friday

The biggest shopping day of the year is around the corner. A survey by local daily deals site OneDayOnly gives a perspective on what to expect.

It’s a little unclear as to where and when exactly Black Friday originated, though many sources believe that it started in Philadelphia all the way back in the 1950s. It’s only in recent years, though, that we’ve seen the “madness” of Black Friday – a day where retailers drop prices to inconceivable lows and a discerning shopper can fill a bakkie with incredible hauls.

At least, that’s been the American Black Friday experience. Here in South Africa, you have to look high and low for the best deals, wading through the many underwhelming “Black Friday specials” unbefitting of the great retail holiday.

A brief overview of Black Friday in ZA

While online purchases are expected to exceed R42-Billion over the Black Friday week, this will only account for 4% of retail sales. That doesn’t mean that customers are shying away from the deals on offer. In fact, the average South African will buy 4.5 products at an average price of R1,735.

OneDayOnly recently surveyed 50,000 of its regular shoppers to find out exactly what they want to get their hands on over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday week. The results corresponded with global findings, though there were a few interesting choices too.

So, which brands can you expect to grab at OneDayOnly from the 22nd to the 29th of November? We can’t spill all the beans, but we can say that you can expect to see major brands at discounts of up to 90%.

The average South African retailer discounts their products by 60% during this period, while OneDayOnly will make additional discounts accessible with the OneDayOnly App.

All their Black Friday week specials are available on both the website and app. The retailer is also connecting users to its support centre through WhatsApp. Queries, returns, complaints, and compliments no longer need to happen over email.

From 1 October to 25 November, it is also giving away over R700,000 in a Spin & Win competition.  Every time users make a purchase on OneDayOnly, they stand a chance to win shopping vouchers, R5000 in Black Friday wallet credit, and prizes like weekends away, Airpods, Smeg appliances, and PS5s.
