HMD Global has announced the South African availability of the fourth generation of its most popular feature phone, the Nokia 105, for R249.

The Nokia 105 has sold in tens of millions across the globe, proving its popularity and quality as a legendary phone. It packs the battery life that Nokia is known for, which allows users to talk from sunset to sunrise with one charge. An island key mat makes dialling and texting comfortable, while its 1.77” colour screen is good for playing games like the classic Snake. With a colour polycarbonate body, the new Nokia 105 combines modern design with durability in a package that offers great value.

 With up to 2,000 contact and 500 SMS storage space, users have the information that matters with them, ensuring they stay connected with all their contacts from one device. Additionally, users can take their music on the go, with Nokia 105’s built-in FM radio and light up their way with the popular LED torchlight.

Inspired by the heritage of Nokia phones, its contoured modern design makes the Nokia 105 a great fit in hand. Its polycarbonate casing minimises the visual impact of knocks and bumps, which provides robust design.

The Nokia 105 will be available in Black form MTN and Vodacom stores for R249 from 15 October.

Nokia 7.2 gets triple camera system

The latest handset from Nokia packs a 48MP triple camera system with Zeiss optics, as well as a PureDisplay screen.

HMD Global, maker of Nokia phones, has announced the Nokia 7.2, the first Nokia smartphone to combine a triple camera and PureDisplay. It features a 48MP triple camera with Quad Pixel technology and Zeiss Optics. It also introduces a range of Zeiss bokeh styles, exclusive to Nokia smartphones, that recreate the way legendary Zeiss lenses produce high visual impact and signature blur. 
Alongside more AI-powered features such as night mode, users can get more creative with their photography. Building on the strengths of its predecessor, Nokia 7.2 combines PureDisplay technology and always-on HDR.

Nokia 7.2 is the first in the Nokia smartphone portfolio to feature a triple camera set up with Zeiss Optics. This is a combination of a highly sensitive 48MP sensor with a Quad Pixel technology main camera with ZEISS Optics, an ultrawide camera and a depth camera. The Quad Pixel technology combines four pixels into one for enhanced images in most conditions. 

The new bokeh styles include a portrait mode, which uses powerful image processing to recreate the way Zeiss lenses produce high visual impact. These blur effects are called Zeiss Modern, Zeiss Swirl and Zeiss Smooth modes. Add beautification to improve skin tones for instantly shareable portraits. AI-powered night mode allows users to capture the moment in low light, combining image fusion and explosion stacking to deliver good low light performance.

It comes with an ultrawide camera, which has a 118-degree field of view that means users can fit a lot more in one shot. The selfie camera also features Zeiss optics with a 20MP.  

With a dedicated Pixelworks visual processor, Nokia 7.2 upscales video content to HDR quality in real-time, with up to a billion shades of colour, higher contrast and expanded dynamic range. This means users can enjoy more contrast and deeper colours when watching TV shows, compared to other displays.

Crafted from polymer composite that is twice as strong as polycarbonate and half the weight of aluminium, the device is light, yet super strong and rigid. 

Nokia 7.2’s light-diffusing satin glass back honours the Finnish glass making heritage and results in a premium finish. Using a multilayer coating system with vacuum metallisation, the result delivers bright colours, a smooth finish and offers durability. 
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform, the device offers balanced performance, making sure the phone is ready when users need it the most. The Nokia 7.2 also comes with the signature two-day battery life promise.

As part of the Android One partnership, Nokia 7.2 is Android Q ready and will receive guaranteed monthly security updates for three years and OS updates for two years, so it is claimed to get better performance over time.

Fitbit OS 4.1: Always-on display, new sleep tools

Fitbit will be releasing the Fitbit OS 4.1 software update in December, delivering always-on display mode for Versa 2 and new sleep tools like smart wake, among other features.

Fitbit has announced several new software updates, bringing advancements to its smartwatches and Fitbit Premium membership service. The release of OS 4.1 for its smartwatches powers new sleep features and greater app functionality. Fitbit Versa 2 will boast an enriched always-on display mode, and a new advanced heart rate algorithm featuring improved tracking, while providing 6+ days of battery life.

Fitbit is also continuing to roll out new content and tools to enhance its Fitbit Premium membership, including a personal wellness report, developed in consultation with leading medical professionals from institutions like University of California Los Angeles, and University of California San Francisco. In addition, over the coming months, Fitbit will be rolling out new programmes, challenges and wellness content, as well as workouts from global brands like Daily Burn, Down Dog, Gaiam, POPSUGAR and Whil.

The OS 4.1 update brings highly-anticipated features announced with Versa 2 to Fitbit Ionic. Among the latest in Fitbit’s innovative sleep tools, OS 4.1 delivers smart wake, a silent on-device alarm to wake users with subtle vibrations at an optimal time in their sleep cycles. Users will also receive a nightly Sleep Score on-device, giving them a glanceable view of the quality of their night’s rest, alongside sleep stats.

One of the most requested updates, a new clock face switcher, lets users store up to five clock faces from nearly 4,000 available in the Fitbit App Gallery directly on-device, for quickly swapping clock faces to match an outfit, activity or mood. A new five-star rating system has been updated within the Fitbit App Gallery, allowing users to rate and recommend apps and clock faces with the Fitbit user community.

Specific to Versa 2 users, Fitbit has doubled-down to enrich the recently-launched always-on display mode to deliver five additional clock face options. Now in colour, these feature full health and fitness stats, with faster transitions between always-on and active views, powered by the device’s AMOLED display, featuring a 2+ day battery life.

Fitbit’s advanced 24/7 PurePulse heart rate tracking keeps users motivated and informed by tracking heart rate throughout the day. The technology also powers essential Fitbit features, such as Sleep Stages and Cardio Fitness Score, that provide deeper insights into one’s overall health and fitness.

Fitbit has announced it has been working on an innovative algorithm that will deliver the best heart rate tracking experience yet on a Fitbit device to Versa 2 as part of the OS 4.1 software update. The new PurePulse algorithm, designed in-house by Fitbit R&D experts, uses machine learning to recognise the unique signature of heart rate in the optical sensor, leading to higher accuracy overall.

Fitbit OS 4.1 will begin rolling out to Fitbit smartwatch users the first week of December.
