Computer gaming has evolved dramatically in the last two years, as it follows the money, writes ARTHUR GOLDSTUCK in the second of a two-part series.
All eyes, however, are on the new word in global spectator sport, esports. In South Africa, it is early days, with total prize money across all tournaments in the single millions of rands. In the USA, the top tournament has a $25-million prize bag.
James points out that esports is still an unknown entity at this stage in South Africa.
“There are many gamers, people and companies interested, but not everyone is approaching it in the right way. It’ll definitely be a very different beast in two to three years, but it’s hard to say what it’ll look like exactly.”
Technology manufacturers see gaming as one of their core businesses.
