Samsung Galaxy S5 goes on sale in SA

Samsung has announced the availability of its most advanced phone yet, the “people-inspired” Galaxy S5, in stores across South Africa today. Here are the full specs.

Samsung Electronics last night announced that the fifth generation Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S5, will be available at cellular outlets and from operators across South Africa today.

The Galaxy S5 exemplifies Samsung’s commitment to “people-inspired innovation,” said Craige Fleischer, Director of Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “The Galaxy S5 represents an iconic design with essential and useful features, offering consumers mobile tools that enable them to effortlessly take control of their lives.

The Galaxy S5 combines a more advanced camera, faster network connectivity, dedicated fitness tools and enhanced device protection features.

The 16 megapixel camera features an enhanced menu and user interface and claims the world’s fastest autofocus speed – as little as 0.3 seconds – and real-time High Dynamic Range (HDR), reproducing natural light and colour with striking intensity. A new Selective Focus feature allows users to focus on a specific area of an object while simultaneously blurring out the background. With this capability, the phone no longer requires a special lens kit to create a shallow depth of field (DOF) effect, a feature typically found on DSLR cameras.

The Galaxy S5 LTE version, model G900F, features advanced LTE experience and Wi-Fi performance. It supports the fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 2X2 MIMO and a large number of LTE frequencies, with LTE Category 4 as standard. For consumers seeking an even faster connection, the Galaxy S5 now features Download Booster, an innovative Wi-Fi technology for enhancing data speed by bonding Wi-Fi and LTE simultaneously.

With the improved S Health 3.0, the Galaxy S5 provides a comprehensive personal fitness tracker to monitor and manage behaviour, along with additional tools including a pedometer, diet and exercise records and a new built-in heart rate monitor. It can further be personalised with an enriched third party application ecosystem and the ability to pair with next generation Gear products for real-time fitness coaching.

The S5 features a perforated pattern on the back cover, creating a modern look, and comes in an array of vivid colours, including charcoal black, shimmery white and electric blue.

It is dust and water resistant and IP67 rated: the 6 means it is dust-tight, the 7 means it can be immersed in water to a depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. It also offers a Finger Scanner, providing a secure, biometric screen locking feature and replacing traditional passwords as well as offering access to Private Mode. An Ultra Power Saving Mode turns the display to black and white when only 10% battery life remains, and shuts down all unnecessary features to minimise the battery consumption. This allows for an additional 24 hours of phone and SMS use.

The phone is sold with an ADH Premium, which covers two breakage claims over the 24 month warranty period, including water or screen damage repairs. An additional Smart Swop or Smart Pick-up service is also included. Smart Swop is an elite benefit for S5 consumers, which allows users to receive a loan device while their smartphone is being repaired. Smart Pick-up is a door-to-door solution, meaning the original device will be collected and returned to the consumer anywhere in South Africa.
