Disney Infinity hits 1m mark

Sales of Disney Infinity are picking up as it heads into the holiday sales season, with starter packs for the game having sold 1 million units around the world, according to Disney Interactive.

It’s a significant milestone for Disney’s games group as it attempts to launch a major franchise for the Mouse House.

Each ‚”Disney Infinity‚” starter pack is priced at $75, and includes the game, and three play sets with a figure in each. Additional figures and discs to play the game are sold separately.

With 1 million starter packs in homes, Disney now has more of a solid reason to call ‚”Disney Infinity‚” a hit.

Last month, the company said it sold 294,000 starter pack units for the game in the U.S. during the last two weeks of August, a strong start for the title at the time.

While it was an impressive number, Jay Rasulo senior executive VP and chief financial officer of the Walt Disney hesitated to pronounce the game a definitive hit during a discussion at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference last month, given that it had only been out in stores for several weeks.

With a major milestone under its belt, Disney is now focused on growing that number even higher, as it rolls out new play sets and figures in the coming months.

The fall is expected to determine whether ‚”Disney Infinity‚” can compete with Activision’s already established ‚”Skylanders‚” franchise, which recently released its third version, ‚”Skylanders SWAP Force.‚”

‚”Disney Infinity‚” features many of the Mouse House’s more popular characters, movies and TV shows.

It will launch new play set ‚”Toy Story in Space‚” on Oct. 22, as the sixth ‚”Disney Infinity‚” play set, following ones themed around ‚”The Incredibles,‚” ‚”Pirates of the Caribbean,‚” ‚”Monsters University,‚” ‚”Cars‚” and ‚”The Lone Ranger.‚”

Individual figures, including ‚”Incredibles’‚” Violet, have been big sellers, with an exclusive Jack Skellington recently selling out at GameStop stores in just three days. Figure will be sold nationwide at retailers on Oct. 29.
