With its refreshed design, the tablet is intended to embody practicality and style, says Samsung. With an incredibly thin, 5.5mm sleek metal body, and weighing only 400g, it’s ultra-portable. It is available in a range of colours, including silver, black, and gold, so one can choose a look that reflects one’s style.

“The Tab S5e is a top-tier tablet with a sleek design and powerful features, available at a new price point,” said DJ Koh, president and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, at Samsung Electronics. “For users who want intelligence that keeps them connected so they can get more done — as well as a big, beautiful screen for a rich, premium entertainment experience — the Tab S5e delivers.”

The tablet packs a large 7040mAh battery, which provides an extended battery life up to 14.5 hours. The latest Android operating system is also optimised for performance.

Intelligence Built-In

As the first Samsung tablet to feature the new Bixby 2.0, it offers a smarter and more convenient way to interact with the device, and serves as an ideal hub to control connected home devices. Switch on the TV and lights at the same time with “Quick Command”, which allows for several actions to be performed from one command — making voice control of one’s home environment faster and more personalised.

One can expect to experience content in sharp detail on its Super AMOLED display, with a 16:10 screen ratio and no visible home key. The tablet offers a 10.5-inch edge-to-edge display with slimmed-down bezels to create an 81.8% screen-to-body ratio.

Its crisp visuals are complemented with rich sound, thanks to its Quad Speakers that incorporate auto-rotate stereo technology for powerful, louder audio that adapts to how one holds the tablet (portrait/landscape). It features Dolby Atmos integration and sound by AKG, for immersive 3D sound. With Spotify preloaded and a free premium subscription of up to 3 months for new members, it allows one to stream tunes uninterrupted.

Availability

The Tab S5e will be available starting at $399.99 in the second quarter of 2019 at Samsung.com and major retailers, with mobile network connected models to follow later in 2019.

Canon EOS R

DxOMark has published the results of its in-depth analysis of the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera.

The Canon EOS R is a mid-range model and the company’s first full-frame mirrorless camera. It features the new RF mount, which at 54mm is the same width as the EF mount, but the focal flange distance is reduced from 44mm to just 20mm. This should pave the way to some very high-performance lenses. For its first camera in the system, Canon has opted for a familiar 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, paired with a DIGIC 8 processor, which enables a native ISO range of 100-40,000 with expansion to 50-102,400, and continuous shooting at up to 8 fps.

The camera’s CMOS sensor achieves an overall DxOMark score of 89 points, which is 29th place among all small- and medium-format cameras in our database. Its key strength is its low-light ISO (Sports) score of 2742 ISO, where it ranks in 27th place overall and in fifth place among the full-frame Canon cameras we’ve tested. Only 0.2 EV (ISO 2742 vs. 3207) separates the EOS R from the best-performing Canon sensor in the EOS-1D X Mark II. The EOS R’s (Portrait) color depth and (Landscape) dynamic range fall some ways behind the best in class, but as with its low-light ISO capabilities, its results are among the best for a Canon sensor.

With the ever present threat of power outages coupled with skyrocketing electricity bills, organisations across sectors are looking for energy efficient and power-saving computing solutions. As with its sister device, the CloudGate X, this mini computer is capable of running the Linux, Windows 10 and Chrome operating systems. However, the CloudGate Xs utilises the newest generation Intel Gemini Lake CPU – and thereby offers a critical performance increase of 25% over the CloudGate X. With its new, sleek design, this powerful device also benefits from improved heat dissipation.

“The CloudGate Xs is an ideal replacement for most desktop computers, at a fraction of the cost,” explains Xavier Nel, Head of Product at CloudGate. “It also comes in at the same price point as the CloudGate X, making it an extraordinarily accessible – yet sophisticated – computing solution. Simply plug in a screen, keyboard and mouse and you have a mini-PC for business or education use.”
This is an eco-friendly solution. By using less than 10 percent of the electricity a typical desktop requires, this user-friendly device lowers the energy footprint for an organisation considerably. With warnings of a fragile Eskom power station always nearby, embracing power-savvy technology – which translates into low running costs – has become increasingly important.

From a connectivity perspective, the computer has 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and 1Gig Ethernet. Despite its sleek form, the device boasts three USB 3.0 ports and several others that include VGA, HDMI, RJ45, one DC 12V 2A power input and one 3.5mm audio port. Users will benefit from 4GB DDR4 High-Speed RAM, 64 GB EMMC Solid-State Storage, and an SD card reader. Moreover, storage capacity can be upgraded with an extra 128GB or 256GB m.2 SSD.

The CloudGate Xs ships with a power adapter, VESA Screen Mount, HDMI cable and instruction booklet. Ranging in cost from between R3 499 and R5 199 (depending on the chosen configuration), the CloudGate Xs delivers on several use cases across industry sectors.
