DVD Review: Catch Me If You Can
A true story directed by Stephen Spielberg, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken.
By his 21st birthday, Frank W. Abagnale JR, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, was on his way to making his first million. But he wasn’t making it the good old-fashioned way of hard solid graft. He was making it by impersonating pilots, doctors and lawyers ‚ cashing in fraudulent cheques along the way. However, as his lifestyle picks up and his expenses become more extravagant, FBI agent Carl Hanrathy, played by Tom Hanks, wonders where all these cheques are coming from and gets onto his trail.
What we thought:
Overall the film had an excellent story line and kept us on the edge of our seats all the way through. Leonardo DiCaprio offered a surprisingly mature rendition of Abagnale, proving that he can master as many roles as the legendary conman himself. However, the suggestion that Abagnale learned what each profession required of him from television was a bit shallow ‚ surely if he really wanted to pass himself off as a professional doctor or lawyer he would do a little more research?
Best part of the film:
After the FBI have finally tracked Frank down and stuck him in jail, they find they have an ongoing problem of cheque fraud. They then decide to hire the guy that they initially set out to catch and make him head-honcho in their cheque fraud division. Ironic, isn’t it?
Worst part of the film:
Frank’s impersonation of James Bond.
This DVD contains English, French and German subtitles and simulcasts, plays for 135 minutes and is suitable for the entire family.
