WirelessCo will boost SA Wi-Fi
The formation of WirelessCo has been approved by the SA Competition Commission. The WirelessCo was formed to accelerate the deployment of Wi-Fi networks, enabling South Africans to access the Internet more affordably.
The formation of WirelessCo, which combines the Wi-Fi network assets of Wi-Fi provider AlwaysOn, owned by Internet Solutions, with the Wi-Fi assets of MWEB Wi-Fi, has been approved by the South African Competition Commission.
WirelessCo will be owned by Dimension Data (51%) and Multichoice (49%) respectively, and the company will build and operate an open access carrier-grade Wi-Fi network.
The new company will comprise of employees from MWEB Wi-Fi, as well as AlwaysOn employees who manage the AlwaysOn network.
Wi-Fi is fast becoming the preferred and most cost effective alternative to traditional data communications in a mobile environment, and WirelessCo will enable the accelerated roll out of a Wi-Fi network that will ensure more and more South African’s can access the Internet affordably,” said Saki Missaikos, Managing Director of Internet Solutions.
