Indies explode onto Nintendo Switch

This year, Nintendo Switch players can expect a large influx of new indie games, as developers move over to creating games in the console’s game design software called Unity. In this wrap, games are sorted by genre.

Turn-based game: Wargroove

Wargroove takes players to battle, where they must choose their Commander and wield their army’s units in a war between factions. The game can be played by up to four players, where they must strategically sway the battle in their favour as they progress through the campaign. It can be played locally by connecting two or more switches together in close proximity, or online. The game will be available to download from the Nintendo eShop from 1 February.

Role-playing games: SteamWorld Quest, CrossCode

SteamWorld Quest is an epic story revolving around what it means to be a hero. The team-based, card-collecting, role-playing game (RPG) allows for billions of potential decks to built, includes some tongue-in-cheek humour, with a storybook-inspired art style and memorable characters. The game will be available for download this year on the Nintendo eShop.

For action, CrossCode may fit the bill. The retro-inspired 2D Action-RPG set in the distant future combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with smooth physics and a fast-paced combat system. Players follow a character called Lea as she logs into CrossWorlds: a fictional MMO of the distant future. Lea is not your average player though, because she has lost her memory. Now the only way to regain her memory is to play CrossWorlds, discovering all the places that the game has to offer and meeting other players on the way. As Lea’s memory returns, a deep mystery surrounding Crosswords is unravelled. The game will be available to download from the Nintendo eShop this year.

The story starts in an old abandoned castle, where you’ll need to explore every nook and cranny, avoid detection, slice your way through enemies, and spring deadly traps in order to escape the evil that lurks within.
