The Sony DSC-U10

Digital cameras are all the rage, because of two main factors. Firstly they don’t use a film and you can re-use the memory card over and over. Secondly you don’t have to wait to see what your pictures look like, you can check them out right there and then and re-shoot if necessary. Sony’s new DSC-U10 digital camera is specifically designed for the home user who wants to take holiday snapshots and cut film processing costs writes SEAN BACHER.

Yip, you might however have to wait for the batteries to charge. Before you can upload your pictures and movies to your computer, you have to install the included software and drivers. Included in the box is Pixela Image viewer for viewing and downloading your images. The software is very straightforward and there is an online manual should you get stuck.

The camera uses a total of six buttons, each one of them is clearly labelled and within easy reach when operating with one hand. The icon-orientated menu is easy to navigate and the various options are logically situated. Taking photos is very easy, basically open the lens door, point the camera at your object and shoot. The automatic focus function ensures your photographs will always come out crisp and sharp and the automatic flash guarantees there will be adequate light when shooting. The USB plug-and-play interface makes connecting the camera to your computer very easy. When you plug in the camera, the software is automatically launched and the images on the camera are ready for you to download and delete.

Sony says you can take the DSC-U10 with you anywhere anytime. I have to agree with them, the camera’s dimension are 85X29X40mm and it weighs a mere 118g. It is perfect for carrying around in your pocket ready to catch anybody doing something they shouldn’t be!

At R2 999-00, you can’t get much cheaper without sacrificing your picture quality. Not only is it very cheap, but it also looks real classy. I think it is a real bargain and is ideal for the home user.
