Mahindra Lifestyler: A pickup with payload and playload

Mahindra is not shy about thinking big, and its latest pickup is proof that the Indian manufacturer has ambitions well beyond its home market.

The new Mahindra Lifestyler has been developed as a global midsize lifestyle pickup and is set to arrive in 2027, and there is a nice South African connection to the story. It was first shown as a concept in Cape Town in August 2023, showing that Mahindra clearly regards South Africa as an important part of its international strategy. The company also values the South African market enough to fly members of the media to Mumbai for the launch, giving us an opportunity to see the production-bound vehicle and get a closer look at Mahindra’s operation.

Mahindra has developed the Lifestyler from the outset with input from customers in international markets. Designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai, it sits on Mahindra’s next-generation body-on-frame architecture. It has been engineered around the familiar requirements of a pickup, namely strength, durability and capability, but with a much greater emphasis on comfort, technology and everyday usability.

In other words, this is a pickup intended to work hard during the week and have some fun at the weekend.

Mahindra describes the Lifestyler as being designed for both payload and playload, which is a rather clever way of explaining what this vehicle is trying to achieve.

Modern lifestyle pickups are no longer workhorses with a load box bolted to the back. Buyers increasingly want something that can carry equipment, tackle difficult terrain and still be comfortable enough for the school run or a long road trip. The Lifestyler has been developed with that mix in mind.

It combines Mahindra’s pickup heritage with a more sophisticated approach to design, safety, technology and refinement. The objective is to offer genuine pickup capability without forcing owners to compromise on the things they expect from a modern SUV.

The global focus is particularly interesting for South Africa, where the pickup market is fiercely competitive and customers expect their vehicles to cope with everything from urban commuting to gravel roads, towing, weekends away and serious off-road adventures.

Mahindra used the launch to show three different interpretations of the Lifestyler, each aimed at a slightly different lifestyle.

The Valley Edition, finished in Artemis grey, is the more understated of the three. It is aimed at buyers who want a balance between work and leisure, combining practicality with a more refined character. The colour takes its inspiration from the layered shades of large lifestyle estates.

Then there is the Reef Edition, finished in aqua reef. This one is clearly aimed at the outdoor crowd, with its inspiration coming from the ocean and the idea of freedom and exploration. It is the version that looks as though it would be quite happy disappearing down a coastal road with a surfboard in the back.

Finally, there is the Trail Edition, finished in Sahara beige. As the name suggests, this is the adventurous one. Inspired by vast sandscapes and the pursuit of new horizons, it is intended to underline the go-anywhere character that Mahindra wants the Lifestyler to deliver.

The three versions also demonstrate that Mahindra sees the lifestyle pickup as more than a utilitarian vehicle. Personalisation and individuality are becoming increasingly important in this segment, and the Lifestyler has been designed to appeal to buyers who want their pickup to reflect how they live.

The real significance of the Lifestyler is the fact that Mahindra is treating it as a global vehicle from day one.

The company says it has been engineered to meet global expectations for capability, durability and safety, while bringing together advanced technology, sophisticated design and greater levels of refinement. It also draws on Mahindra’s experience in the international pickup market.

For South African buyers, that global development process could be key. This market is demanding, particularly when it comes to pickups, and local customers tend to have very clear ideas about what they expect from a vehicle wearing a load box.

Mahindra knows that.

The company is positioning the Lifestyler as a vehicle capable of handling work, adventure and everyday life without having to change personality every time the road surface does. That is an ambitious target, but it is also where the modern lifestyle pickup market is heading.

Mahindra has taken a concept first shown to the South African market, developed it in India with global ambitions and turned it into a vehicle intended to compete on an international stage.

That is a considerable journey for a pickup, and South Africa will be watching with interest.
