Prepare to defend the Ancients

Registration for the sub-Saharan Qualifiers for the Defence of the Ancients 2 world champions to be held in Taipei, Taiwan has opened today.

If you have what it takes to be a Dota (Defense of the Ancients) 2 world champion, now is your chance to take part in the first ever qualifier on home soil for the international eSports tournament of the year, the MSI Beat IT 2014 tournament in Taipei, Taiwan.

Registrations for the Sub-Saharan Qualifiers, hosted by MWEB GameZone, opened today.

The Beat IT competition started in 2010, but this is the first time that Africa has its own qualifier. MWEB is very proud to be associated and to bring our talented gamers such an incredible opportunity for international success. As the largest host of gaming infrastructure in SA, we give priority to gamers on our network, but beyond that, we are passionate about gaming and about creating amazing opportunities for our gamers,” says Des Kurz, head of Digital and Gaming at MWEB.

The Beat IT 2014 competition will be preceded by qualifiers in North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific, South East Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa. There are two legs to the Africa qualifiers – North Africa (Egypt) and Sub-Saharan Africa (SA) and MWEB will be running the Sub-Saharan Qualifiers and the Africa finals.

Kurz explains how it works: “We have invited eight of the top Dota 2 teams in South Africa and Namibia, the two countries that have Dota 2 formalised leagues that we know of, to take part. However, our Sub-Saharan qualifiers also make provision for a 32 team group stage, which means the top eight teams from that group stage will go head-to-head with the eight invited teams to determine the top four teams that will be taking part in the Africa final.

The top four Sub-Saharan teams will take on the top four North African teams to determine the winning team that qualifies to go to the finals in Taipei, Taiwan. MSI will provide the winning African team with accommodation at the event, US$5000 towards their travel as well as five MSI gaming laptops.
