AppDate: Immediate and accurate crime info

CrimeSpotter

South Africans can now stay more informed on crime and safety issues in their neighbourhood through CrimeSpotter. It combines technology and data from the community, which is then shared.

The idea behind the app is to use South Africans’ eyes and ears to report all crimes and provide any additional information to create a modus operandi and to let others know how they can avoid falling victim to a similar type of crime.

For example, most property crimes can be prevented by taking simple steps, such as locking doors and removing valuables from plain view. If people know that these types of crimes are being reported in their neighbourhoods, they can better prepare their property.

Crimes are instantly mapped and nearby users, police stations and community policing patrols alerted.

Crimes can then be searched or browsed as pins on a map or in a timeline format.

Reporting incidents on CrimeSpotter does not replace an official police report, and is done to alert others and to contribute data to the central crime database.

RocketNet Probe

RocketNet’s Probe application allows its users to diagnose slow Internet connections.

It is designed to take the guesswork out of diagnosing an internal network and points to the exact issue at hand. Most ISPs will tell customers to reboot their routers in the hope this will solve their issues, but downloading this app is claimed to save customers both time and money through its operational efficiency.

The app was developed by Canadian based company RouteThis, to change the customer support experience for both support agents and customers.

With RocketNet Probe, users and agents are able to work together to diagnose the cause of slow Internet connections and remedy the issues to get to the expected level of performance. In addition, customer service agents can securely, remotely and anonymously access customers’ routers to configure their full internal networks.

RocketNet Probe works with any ISP and is not an exclusive service to RocketNet customers.

Platform: Android and iOS

Expect to pay: A free download

HealthCheck

The Department of Basic Education and E³ recently launched a Covid-19 digital pre-screening risk assessment and mapping tool, HealthCheck, on the TeacherConnect platform.

The TeacherConnect platform is being developed as a way to support teachers by providing access to learning content on WhatsApp.
