Vodacom offers data roaming cap

A new service from Vodacom allows travellers to avoid the massive billshock that accompanies international data use. It is initially offered for 26 countries.

Vodacom has announced a new product, Travel Saver, that is designed to help contract customers manage their roaming spend and significantly reduce international roaming bills. The service gives contract customers access to lower-priced fixed rates for calls, SMS and data when travelling in 26 countries..

Essentially, it means the user of roaming data is limited a R30 a day fee, plus a charge of R2 per MB, regardless of how high their usage level is. This compares to the typically international roaming cost of more than R100 per MB.

The package is structured like this:

CALLS MADE

RECEIVED CALLS

R30.00

R2.50/min

R2.50/min

R0.80

R2.00/MB

The service is free to opt into. If call, SMS, or data usage activity happens while the customer is overseas, the flat-rate fees will automatically kick-in and the daily subscription fee of R30.00 will be applied. If no billable activity takes place, then no daily fee will be applied.

To opt into the service, SMS the word ‚”SAVE‚” to 123 or +27 82 123. Upon returning to South Africa the service will remain activated on the SIM card but will only apply when travelling. To deactivate the service, send the word ‚”SAVEOFF‚” to 123 or +27 82 123.

The service is currently available in the following 26 countries and applies to all networks within those countries:
