Opera Mini for Android released

Opera Software yesterday announced that its widely used Opera Mini browser for mobile phones will now be available for the Android platform, the moible operating system being developed by Google. At this stage it is still a technical preview release from Opera, but will soon be available for any handset built with Android (and you can download it now).

Opera has gone Google with its Mini browser for mobile phones, making it available for the Android platform.

The new version is available at the Opera Labs web site, and Opera is inviting the Android development community to test the fresh build and share feedback with Opera for the forthcoming beta. Opera Mini for Android makes the company’s device-adapting Web browser available to any range of handsets built on Android.

Opera is renowned for its cross-platform portability and, says the company, this release embraces the Android platform in Opera’s commitment to making the Internet experience available on any device.

“We’re glad to deliver our mass-market mobile browser to the Android development groups,”” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “”Opera Mini will be able to empower users of Android-based handsets with access to all of their favourite Web sites with popular features for smooth effects and scalable, tailored viewing.””

Opera Mini boasts more than 40 million users worldwide across mobile platforms. It enables Web browsing from low-to-high resource handsets by compressing data at a remote server before sending content to the phone applet for rendering. Its features include desktop-like Web browsing from a mobile phone, with Small Screen Rendering, Zoom, synced bookmarks and integrated Google search.
