UCook’s increase in food delivery

UCook has scaled from 24 meals in its first delivery five years ago, to thousands every week now. The reason for this scalability, the company says, is Picup’s logistics solution.

UCook provides ingredients and well-written recipes. Its food team collaborates with top SA chefs and food talent to produce 12 recipes each week. Customers can choose their favourites online and have pre-portioned ingredients with recipe cards delivered.

Bunna Booyens, UCook head of logistics, says Picup is responsible for approximately 2,600 of its weekly deliveries, ensuring that all meals are delivered on time. “Customers can choose which recipes they’d like to cook each week. Our fresh, locally sourced ingredients – in the perfect portions – are delivered straight to our customers each week.”

Picup’s reliable tech, responsive support and crowdsourced fleet, it says, has allowed UCook to scale without the teething problems one would generally experience when using traditional carriers. Picup’s Transport Management System (TMS) helps streamline the entire logistics and last-mile delivery process.

Picup TMS offers integrated customisable SMS and e-mail notifications to let customers know when the delivery is around the corner. The SMS sent to customers includes a link to track drivers, with all their details, and e-mails sent to remind customers that their meal kit is on the way also notifies them when it had been successfully delivered.

Platform: Most devices with an Internet connection

Expect to pay: A free service but ingredients, food items and delivery charges vary.

Giftr

Giftr, an app that allows one to create GIFs from their old images, has now been upgraded to support  34 languages, 7-million filters and 27 editing tools. Using new technology, such as GIPHY’s SDK, users can layer GIPHY Stickers onto their own GIFs.

Using AR, Giftr also allows one to interact with GPS positions, where images are situated at their corresponding coordinates.

Everything is done via a smartphone, making it great for offline use as well. Once users are back online, they can share images through various social media platforms.

Platform: iOS only

Expect to pay: A free download but with loads of in-app purchases

Pick ‘n Pay Group’s Boxer Stores now support Deposit @ Till

Following Pick ‘n Pay’s launch of a new point-of-sale service called Deposit @ Till, the functionality has been extended to include the Pick ‘n Pay Group’s Boxer Stores. Deposit @ Till enables customers to make direct cash deposits into their bank accounts at any Pick ’n Pay and Boxer store countrywide.

Deposit @ Till was developed by Efficacy Payments in partnership with Transaction Junction, with Absa as the sponsoring bank.

Efficacy Payments managing director Andrew Marsh says there is still a large need to expand customer access to financial services: “A significant number of wage earners still get paid in cash on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis. By the time they finish work and get paid, most traditional bank branches are closed and cash accepting ATMs are few and far between. This leaves wage earners vulnerable to criminal elements as they make their way home.”

With Pick n Pay and Boxer’s significant national footprint and daily, longer trading hours, the Deposit @ Till service will now enable customers to deposit wages and other funds into any Visa or Mastercard linked bank account.

Platform: South Africans wanting to use this service simply need to go  their nearest Pick ’n Pay to make a deposit.

Expect to pay: A free service, but users may incur banking fees for depositing cash.

Stockists: Visit Pick ’n Pay here to find the closest branch.

Averly’s tenant test platform

Averly has designed a platform that it says will digitalise the rental industry – moving the whole process of applying for accommodation and sifting through possible applicants to managing properties online.

The platform combines technology and behavioural analysis to help landlords and rental agents identify and keep good tenants. At the same time, it provides responsible tenants with a tangible way to improve their reputations, making future applications easier and possible financial benefits a reality.

The platform revolves around an Averly score that tenants obtain through answering a set of 22 specifically formulated questions. Averly uses machine learning and behavioural science to extrapolate from those questions whether a person will make a decent tenant or be likely to disrespect the property, be disruptive neighbours or submit late or no payments.

The higher the score, the better the tenant.

Platform: Most new devices with an up-to-date Internet browser

Expect to pay: A free service
