AMD expands in SA

AMD chairman and CEO Hector Ruiz was in Johannesburg last week to announce the opening of a local office in South Africa, and the appointment of a country manager.

AMD Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Hector Ruiz has announced that AMD will open a local South African office in July as the next step in strengthening its commitment to the regional market. At an event in Johannesburg last week, Ruiz said the new office is a result of AMD’s significant growth within the local market, recognising that AMD’s increased sales and market share reflect AMD’s success in meeting customers’ needs.

‚South Africa is becoming increasingly prominent within the global IT market, and is vital to AMD’s overall success,‚ said Ruiz. ‚As such, we are increasing AMD’s commitment to South Africa and expanding our presence in the region. We will continue defining our success based on working closely with computer manufacturers, distributors, resellers, government and end users to ensure we are delivering solutions that best address local needs and concerns.‚

At the same event, AMD Vice President Gautam Srivastava announced the appointment of Imi Mosaheb as AMD country manager for South Africa.

‚In his new role, Imi will be responsible for driving AMD’s business development, including major South African government technology initiatives and building and cultivating relationships with key customers,‚ said Srivastava, vice president, sales and marketing: managing director, Middle East, Africa (MEA) and Pakistan.

Imi Mosaheb brings 16 years of experience in the technology industry to this post. Throughout the past five years at AMD, Mosaheb led the global business development for AMD with HP commercial clients. Mosaheb will be based in Johannesburg and report to Srivastava.

Commenting on AMD’s sharpened focus on South Africa, Ruiz said high-growth markets such as South Africa play a key role in AMD’s overall success.

Besides meeting with customers in South Africa, Ruiz also met with President Thabo Mbeki and Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, to assess the progress AMD has made locally together with its partners in executing the 50×15 vision. 50×15 is an initiative close to Ruiz’s heart, launched by AMD at the 2004 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting to enable affordable Internet connectivity and computing capability for 50 percent of the world’s population by the year 2015. More than corporate social responsibility, 50×15 is about encouraging sustainable economic progress and investment within high-growth markets in ways that benefit a wide range of people and businesses.

In these meetings, Ruiz also discussed AMD’s presence in South Africa as well as the company’s efforts to promote a fair and open competitive environment to expand choice for businesses and consumers throughout the local market.
