Absa takes lead in Apple Watch race

Absa has edged out Standard Bank by launching South Africa’s first Apple Watch banking app, writes GARETH VAN ZYL.

Absa was the last of four major banks in South Africa to launch a mobile app.

But this time round Absa has beat all other banks including Standard Bank to the Apple Watch app chase.

In June, Standard Bank announced that it is building an app for the Apple Watch – a smartwatch device that officially went on sale this year. However, Standard Bank has yet to officially release its Apple Watch app.

“We’ve introduced an Apple Watch app that allows you to view your account balances in a graphic meter gauge view,” read an update on Absa’s Apple app page.

“Pair your device and Apple Watch and set your account balance indicators using the watch management tool accessible from the dashboard menu,” the update added.

Absa has also unveiled a YouTube video that markets its new Apple Watch app. The video further features Cape Town artist Lorraine Loots who specialises in miniature paintings.

Absa, on its Facebook page, has also explained how users can activate the Apple Watch. The company said that users must first set up ‘Watch Management’ on their iPhones phone before using the app on Apple Watch.

“To make sure this process is as safe and secure as possible, the app registration process must begin on your phone. Once that’s done you’re good to go,” said Absa.
