LED makes TV greener

These days, consumers are faced with a range of options when choosing a new TV. JUSTIN SHAW, Business Leader for Visual Displays at Samsung SA, says that people now have one more option to consider, and that is the impact it makes on the environment.

These days, most people who are in the market for a new TV face with a plethora of choices. In the past, it was easy. You could either opt for a black and white TV or make a sizable investment and purchase a colour TV. Today, there are technologies such as LED, LCD, plasma, and 3D to take into account. And that is not even considering value-added features such as Smart TV, application streaming, and various connection inputs and outputs.

But even as the global TV market is expected to grow to $14.6 billion in 2013, consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact their increasing electronics usage is having. As they strive to become more ‚’green’ and energy efficient, tough decisions are made when it comes to purchasing items for their home. This impacts not only their choice in smaller electronics devices like mobile phones and tablets but also items like washing machines, fridges, and televisions.

Do you remember the impact replacing your old fluorescent light bulbs at home with LED ones had on your electricity bill? Well, the same applies to TVs. One new technology that is gaining momentum is that of LED, or light-emitting diode. The demand for TV sets that feature LED backlit technology is increasing every quarter with people starting to view this as the default buying option. A big part of this can be attributed to the fact that these sets benefit from drastically reduced power consumption.

On average, an LED circuit only loses 20% of electrical energy as heat, as opposed to older incandescent technology which loses 80%*. The impact on not only energy consumption but on cost is significant, where LED displays use the least energy of any flat-panel technology, and as a result LED TVs are becoming increasingly popular amongst energy conscious consumers.

Further to energy efficiency, Samsung LED TVs offer design that goes beyond technology, creating an emotional connection between the TV and consumer who now also enjoys the enhanced picture quality and better contrast ratio benefits.

Additionally, Samsung is committed to bringing to market products that boast the very best in energy saving technology as with LED TVs. However, our commitment goes further than this, where we recently signed the 49M pledge committing the brand to energy efficiency through our product line and internal processes. This is part of encouraging a national culture of energy saving for a sustainable future. Developing LED technology within the TV and lighting businesses becomes even more critical in this landscape then and it is here that we are continuing to drive our commitment.

Sustainable business practices for consumer electronics companies are essential to reflect the need to become more environmentally conscious. So if you are going to invest in a new TV, choosing an LED TV will provide you with not only the best picture image but will ensure that you maintain the best possible energy efficiency without any additional effort.
