91 tonnes of e-waste collected

Incredible Connection reports that electronic waste (e-waste) collected during its annual Trade-In and Buy campaign increased more than fourfold this year as consumer awareness of environmental issues increased.

The company collected a record 91 tonnes of e-waste compared to only 19 tonnes last year from its 55 stores countrywide.

‚We are pleased that as a major technology vendor our trade-in has yielded such great results. We are able to safely dispose of old computers, cellphones, printers, cameras and other gadgets and at the same time refurbish those in workable condition to benefit those who are underprivileged in our society,‚ says Incredible Connection’s Chief Executive, Dave Miller.

Through its recycling initiative EnviroConnection, Incredible Connection in partnership with Desco Electronic Recyclers., an accredited electronic waste disposal company, will discard technology items that consumers don’t need in an environmentally safe and responsible manner.

‚It is important to note that consumers are becoming aware of the need to safeguard the environment. By collecting this 91 tonnes, we have managed to keep this e-waste out of landfills and avoided placing toxic waste into the environment,‚ said Desco’s Transport and Logistics Manager, Martin Ferreira.

The Gauteng region, South Africa’s industrial hub, collected the most with 66 tonnes, followed by the Cape Region with 17 and a half tonnes, KwaZulu Natal with five and a half tonnes and Bloemfontein and Kimberley with two tonnes. Incredible Connection has to date refurbished 50 computers which will be distributed to underprivileged communities needing technology.

‚E-waste poses a serious threat to our environment and we realise this initiative cannot be limited to this annual event. We have therefore ensured that E-waste bins are available in all our stores throughout the year to help people dispose of their electronic waste in a responsible manner,‚ said Miller.
