Samsung’s latest premium line-up of QLED TVs have arrived in South Africa. The new range’s sets a high bar, demonstrating innovation in picture quality, design and interactivity.
“These latest QLED TVs exhibit the continuous evolution of television, not only with regard to people’s entertainment, but also with aesthetics within the home,” says Mike van Lier, Director: Consumer Electronics at Samsung South Africa. “QLED TVs deliver true-to-life picture quality, smart features that facilitate access to today’s limitless content, as well as beautiful design that gives users the freedom to put the TV wherever their lifestyle demands. With QLED every seat is a great seat.”
The new flagship line of QLED TVs includes three series: the Q7, Q8 and Q9, which will be available in a combination of flat and curved models.
Samsung’s QLED range enhances Quantum Dot technology with advancements in light efficiency, stability and a wider colour spectrum. In addition, it addresses all the major aspects of picture quality, including viewing angle, colour volume, brightness and bold contrast.
When it comes to colour, for example, the innovative metal Quantum dot technology ensures that Samsung’s QLED TVs are able to showcase 100% colour volume due to the metal Quantum Dot having greater light efficiency, along with a peak brightness of HDR 1,500-2,000 nits turning light into pure colour.
“By improving on all aspects of picture quality, extremely dark as well as extremely bright hues contrast with superiority and maintain colour at any viewing angle,” says van Lier. “
Not only are the TVs themselves sleeker and more pleasing to the eye, they also come with a transparent cable that allows all of the appliance’s connected devices to come together seamlessly, de-cluttering any room and ultimately removing unsightly and tangled cables. At the same time, the No Gap Wall-mount – which is available for all QLED TVs – allows consumers to place their TV flush against the wall, providing yet another way to reclaim their living space, including reduced TV installation time by 60 percent, with an easy 15-minute setup.
In addition Samsung’s Smart Hub has been expanded to offer an even more intuitive and unified experience, directly via the QLED TV. The enhanced Samsung One Remote Control now supports more devices and offers voice control capabilities across more Smart TV features. When paired with the latest Smart View App – available on Android or iOS mobile devices – users will be able to enjoy a personalised Smart Hub.

Kia makes car audio personal
KIA Motors has revealed its Separated Sound Zone (SSZ) technology that allows each passenger of a vehicle to experience an audio stream tailored to their individual needs.
SSZ technology creates and controls the acoustic fields of the car, allowing the driver and each passenger to hear isolated sounds. The many speakers installed in the vehicle feature technology that uses scientific principles to reduce or increase audio levels of sound waves. This negates the overlap of sounds being heard in each seat, creating the same effect as current noise cancellation systems, but without the need for headphones.
“Customers in the autonomous navigation era will demand increasingly customisable entertainment options within their vehicles, which includes technological innovations such as the Separated Sound System.” says Kang-duck Ih, Research Fellow at KIA’s NVH Research Lab. “I hope by providing drivers and passengers with tailored, independent audio spaces, they will experience a more comfortable and entertaining transportation environment.”
People’s musical tastes vary, so some passengers choose to use headphones during a journey to isolate their audio stream, but this also creates an unnecessary social barrier when interacting with other passengers. When travelling in a vehicle equipped with next-generation SSZ technology, each passenger can connect their smartphone via Bluetooth and listen to their own music without interference from, or interfering with other passenger’s audio streams.
When the SSZ is utilised, hands-free phone calls can also be isolated to individual passengers, ensuring privacy when having important phone conversations on the move.
Furthermore, this ground-breaking technology can eliminate unnecessary sounds for the passenger, but provide them for the driver. Navigation sounds, or various alerts, allow the driver to focus on controlling the vehicle, while the SSZ system isolates these sounds, maintaining a quiet area for the other passengers. This has a particularly strong application for drivers with a sleeping child in the vehicle.
SSZ technology has been in development since 2014, and the completed mass production system is expected to be ready for installation in vehicles within one to two years.

In the future, TVs with built in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be able to learn usage patterns and automatically switch modes based on user preference, and even take instructions from multiple users as TVs become increasingly connected to digital home assistant systems.
